Men's
Tennis Continues to Roll, Down Virginia, 5-2 April 4, 2002
WASHINGTON American's men's tennis team continued its outstanding run, defeating Virginia, 5-2, this afternoon at Reeves Courts. The win improves the Eagles' record to 12-1 on the season, and keeps them a perfect 4-0 at home this season. The victory was redemption for a defeat at the hands of the Cavaliers last season, 6-1. American, ranked No. 65 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), set the tone early by claiming two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Josh Procacci and Bence Hamori teamed at No. 2 doubles to down Jay Curtis and Jason Romesburg, 8-4. In No. 3 doubles action, Tushar Garg played with regular partner Andreas Kulcsar, and the duo remained perfect in the spring with an 8-4 victory. Michael Duquette and Stephen Nolen clawed past Jonah Fliegelman and Guillaume Taralle at first doubles, 8-4. The turning point in the singles action came when the Eagles' Guilaume Taralle rallied past Gregory Alpert at No. 6 singles. In the second-set tiebreak down five set-points, Taralle made a ferocious comeback, going on to win the match in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6 (9). Juan Jaysingh also came back from 4-1 down in the first set at No. 4 singles to defeat Jay Curtis, 6-4, 7-6 (7). Capping the Eagles' comebacks this afternoon, Hamori rallied from a set down to win his first singles match, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2. Procacci won in impressive fashion at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Garg, who had won his sixth previous matches, fell to Stephen Nolen, 3-6, 7-6 (7), 3-6.
