Tennis Overwhelms Lehigh, 7-0 April 7, 2002
BETHLEHEM, Pa. American's men's tennis team continued its remarkable season today, defeating Lehigh, 7-0. American, ranked No. 65 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, has now won eleven straight matches on the season and improves to 14-1 and 4-0 in the Patriot League. Lehigh drops to 10-7 overall and 0-2 in Patriot League play. While the Eagles did not allow a point to the Mountain Hawks, the road to victory was not easy. The top three singles matches were all extremely close. Josh Procacci won for American at No. 1 singles 6-7, 6-2, 10-7 over Ryan Cann. Playing at No. 2 singles for the first time all season, Juan Jaysingh won his fifth match in a row, defeating Ty Esler 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. Kyle Bailey played at third singles for the first time this season and won 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 against Matt Danker. American showed its depth at the fourth through sixth positions in singles play as all three Eagles won in straight sets. Guillaume Taralle won 6-3, 6-3 over Craig Ditman at fourth singles while Andreas Kulscar defeated Andrew Shapiro 6-2, 6-3. Jonah Fliegelman easily won at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-2. American won the doubles point thanks to victories at No. 2 doubles by Kulscar and Fliegelman and No. 3 doubles by Procacci and Jaysingh. Taralle and Bailey were defeated by Cann and Danker at first doubles for Lehighs lone victory of the day. With the win over
Lehigh, American clinched a spot in the Patriot League Championships to
be held April 27-28. The Eagles return to action on April 18 when the
travel to UMBC.
