Martin Named to Academic All-America At-Large Teams May 16, 2002
WASHINGTON The outstanding year for American Universitys mens and womens tennis program continued today, as Bence Hamori (Budapest, Hungary/Budapest U. of Physical Ed.) and Lauren Martin (Wellington, New Zealand/Samuel Marsden Collegiate) garnered two more academic honors. The seniors were named to their respective 2002 Verizon Academic All-America District Two At-Large First Teams, becoming the fourth and fifth such recipients for AU this year. The University has enjoyed a remarkable year in 2001-02, its first as a member of the Patriot League, a league which was founded on the principles of admitting student-athletes who are academically representative of their class. Hamori, a member of the mens tennis team, holds a 3.81 grade-point average (GPA) in business administration. The Patriot League Player of the Year led American to its first league title in 2002, and the programs first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He posted an overall record of 17-7 at first singles and was 18-8 at first doubles. Hamori also captured the No. 1 singles title at the Patriot League Individual Championship in the fall. Americans mens tennis team finished the season with a record of 19-2 and the squad went a perfect 6-0 in Patriot League play. The 19 wins established a new school record and the Eagles season included a 16-match winning streak. A communications
major with a 3.89 GPA, Martin was
named the Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading AUs womens
tennis team to its first-ever league title. American made the programs
first appearance in the NCAA Tournament on the strength of Martins
outstanding play. She posted a 15-7 mark primarily at fourth singles,
and a 12-6 mark in doubles action while being named All-Patriot League.
In addition, Martin captured the fourth flight singles title at the Patriot
League Individual Championships in the fall. To be considered for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and be an important player on their respective team. Student-athletes from 14 different sports are eligible for the at-large squad. American University is concluding its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 womens sports and nine for men.
