Eagles
to Face Duke in NCAA First Round May 2, 2002
WASHINGTON American's mens and women's tennis teams received their bids to the NCAA Tournament this evening, as announced by the NCAA Tennis Committee via a selection show broadcast live on the internet. The Eagle men will travel to Durham, N.C., to face Duke (15-11) in the first round on Saturday, May 11. California (18-6) plays UMBC (18-7) in the other first-round pairing of the bracket. The winners will then square off in a second round match on Sunday, May 12. Americans mens (19-1) team received an automatic bid to the NCAAs after sweeping through the Patriot League Tournament this past weekend. The Eagles prevailed, 4-0, over the Army in the semifinals, and then dispatched Colgate, 4-0, in the Championship match. A first NCAA appearance is not the only record to have fallen for American's tennis program this season. The Eagles have set a new school record for wins with 19 this season, winning the last 16 matches they have played. In addition, sophomore Guillaume Tarralle has set a new school mark for consecutive wins with 16 and tied Miles Nelson for the most singles wins in a season with 23.
