June 11, 2002

Patriot League Player of the Year Bence Hamori was named to the Verizon Academic All-America National At-Large First Team.

WASHINGTON — American University’s Bence Hamori (Budapest, Hungary/Budapest U. of Physical Ed.) received his most prestigious academic honor of the year today as the senior was named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-America Men’s At-Large First Team. Hamori becomes the ninth Academic All-American in the University’s history.

Hamori, a member of the men’s tennis team, holds a 3.81 grade-point average (GPA) in business administration. The Patriot League Player of the Year led American to its first league title in 2002, and the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He posted an overall record of 17-7 at first singles and was 18-8 in doubles play. Hamori also captured the No. 1 singles title at the Patriot League Individual Championship in the fall. He was named to the District II Academic At-Large First Team in May and is the only District II member on the national first team.

American’s men’s tennis team finished the season with a record of 19-2 and the squad went a perfect 6-0 in Patriot League play. The 19 wins established a new school record and the Eagles season included a 16-match winning streak.

To be considered for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must hold a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher and be an important player on their respective team. Student-athletes from 14 different sports are eligible for the at-large squad.

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.

Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
