Bear Schofield joins
head coach Martin Blackman and the Eagles in his second year in the collegiate
coaching ranks. With his help, AU has reached its highest ever ITA team
ranking at No. 68 in 2003 while helping the Eagles win two straight Patriot
League Championships and subsequent berths into the NCAA Tournament. The
program set another first when Juancarlo Vazquez reached No. 116 as an
individual by ITA.

A teaching professional
at the 4 Star Tennis Academy since October 2000, Schofield brings a wealth
of knowledge and experience as both a former player and instructor.
A 1998 graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in psychology,
Schofield was the No. 1 singles player and part of the No. 1 doubles pair
as a Cavalier. A two time First-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
selection, Schofield captained the team in his last two seasons and was
the recipient of the Dan Lehman’s Doubles Award in 1996. He was
also named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll four times.
Schofield also earned the No. 1 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association
(MATA) and was ranked as high as No. 25 nationally. He was also part of
the fourth-ranked doubles team in the country in 1994.
At the 4 Star Tennis Academy, Schofield has been working with the top
juniors in the Mid-Atlantic region in addition to running tennis events
and creating new fitness programs. He also developed the institute’s
website and currently acts as its webmaster.
A native of the Washington, D.C., area, Shofield also served as a head
teaching assistant at the Columbia Country Club where he was responsible
for the development of the junior tennis program.
Schofield currently resides in Falls Church, Va.
