Bassett Finishes Seventh in 200 Breast at Olympic Trials
Two other Eagles compete in trials

Ethan Bassett on Sunday finished seventh in the 200m breast at the U.S. Olympic Trials.

WASHINGTON - Former American University swimmer Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) on Sunday finished seventh in the 200m breaststroke at the USA Olympic Trials held in Long Beach, Calif.

Bassett, who recently graduated from AU, clocked a 2:16.03 in the finals after finishing in 2:16.19 in his preliminary heat. The winner, Brendan Hansen, finished seven seconds ahead in a world-record time of 2:09.04. The previous record was 2:09.42, set by Japan's Kosuke Kitajima in 2003. USA's other qualifier in the 200 breast, Scott Usher, finished in 2:10.90. ...

Growing up, Ethan Bassett spent much of his youth in and around the pool. Now as an adult, he still spends most of his time at the pool, training for one of the most prestigious and important events in the nation, the United States Olympic Trials.

Recently closing out one of the most successful collegiate career in years, Bassett finished the 2004 season with two Patriot League conference titles and the league’s second highest career point total. Over his career at American, he has compiled 14 conference titles, including the distinction as the Colonial Athletic Association’s (CAA) Rookie of the Year. Now he looks to add to those accomplishments and become the programs sixth Olympian. ...
