American
Swimming Has Four Placewinners at US Open Championships
Liscinsky takes fifth in 100 Backstroke;Szabo finishes
thirteenth in 100 Breaststroke

LONG ISLAND, N.Y.--
Eight swimmers and one assistant coach represented American University
at the U.S. Open Swimming Championships held in Long Island, N.Y. on Nov.
29-Dec. 1. Three current swimmers, sophomore Ethan
Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill), junior Mark
Liscinsky (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and sophomore Dominick
Szabo (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) placed at the event, along with
current assistant coach Frank Byskov
(American '01).
Liscinsky had the highest finish at the meet, finishing fifth in the 100
Backstroke with a time of 55.89, notching a short course meter school
record. He had a second short course record at the meet in the 200 Individual
Medley, which he finished in 2:04.46 for 12th place.
After swimming a 2:21.47 in the preliminaries of the 200 Breastroke, Bassett
finished with a 2:18.78 in the finals to put him in 17th place in the
event. He also finished 18th in the 400 Individual Medley in 4:27.81,
a short course meter school record.
Szabo put up a short course meter school record as well with a 1:03.89
in the 100 Breastroke. He finished at 13th in this event and also came
in 13th in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:05.32.
American assistant coach Byskov also competed at the amateur event and
finished 19th in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:52.49. Other American
mens' competitors included Erik
Hollingshead (Magnolia, Tex./Klein Forest), who swam in the preliminary
100 Freestyle, 100 Breastroke, 200 Breastroke, and 200 Individual Medley
events, Mike Lawson (West Chester,
Pa./Westtown School), who competed in the preliminaries of the 100 Backstroke,
200 Backstroke, and 200 Individual Medley and Stephen
Maher (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln), who swam preliminary races in the 50
Freestyle, 100 Freestyle, and 200 Freestyle.
On the women's side, Stina Lindman
(Skane, Sweden/Polhemsskolan) notched a short course meter school
record in her preliminary 100 Breastroke race with a time of 1:13.16.
She also swam the 200 Breastroke and 200 Individual Medley preliminary
events. Maria Ortiz (Cali, Columbia/Bolles
School) rounded out the Eagles entrants, swimming the 100 Breastroke,
200 Breastroke, and 200 Individual Medley preliminary events.

The American swimming
and diving teams have a break until Jan. 19, when some team members travel
to Spain for the VI Tourneo Ciudad. The men and women return to action
on Jan. 26 when they host Army at 12:00 p.m. in the Reeves Aquatic Center.
