American lands 21 on Swimming & Diving Academic Honor Roll
Lidstrom and Bassett headline list as PL Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year lead the way for AU swimming on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

WASHINGTON -- Twenty-one members of American University’s men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams were named to the 2002 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. The Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athletes of the Year, American sophomores Ethan Bassett (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Jessica Lidstrom (Stockholm, Sweden/The Swedish School in London), finished the spring semester with grade-point averages (GPA) of 3.79 and 4.0, respectively.

A student-athlete must earn a 3.20 GPA in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the 13 League-sponsored championship sports in the winter or spring. On the men’s side, the Eagles had seven student-athletes while Holy Cross and Bucknell topped all schools with eight apiece. For the women, American had 14 student-athletes, second only to Bucknell’s 18.

Joining Bassett on the Academic Honor Roll were teammates Seth Bell (Jenkintown, Pa./Abington), Erik Hollingshead (Magnolia, Texas/Klein Forest), Mike Lawson (West Chester, Pa./Westtown High School), William Linnoila (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson), Mark Liscinsky (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Stephen Miller (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln).

Representing the Eagles from the women’s team were 14 athletes including Nicole Bogusky (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley), Elizabeth Bresnahan-McRae (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown), Devon Chokel (Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken School), Anne Girvin (Bethlahem, Pa./Liberty), Junkal Irigoien (San Sebastian, Spain/Compania de Maria) and Kia Kilpinen (Stockholm, Sweden/ASO Gymnasium).

Other American athletes awarded were Stina Lindman (Skane, Sweden/Polhemsskolan), Jennifer McGill (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips), Lindsay Metcalfe (Braintree, Ma./Braintree), Maria Ortiz (Caliz, Columbia/The Bolles School), Julia Pollock (Indiana, Pa./Indiana), Lian Tay (Princeton Jct., N.J./W. Windsor-Plainsboro) and Elizabeth West (Brentwood, Tenn./Univ. School of Nashville).

American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse.
