Three First Place Finishes Highlight Day

Jan. 19, 2002 | Meet Stats

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — American University’s men’s track team travelled to Lehigh Saturday to face Rider, Wagner, and Patriot League foe Lehigh. Competing in only a handful of the events, the Eagles came away with a third place team finish behind Lehigh and Rider.

Sean O'Brien captured the 1,000-meter run in an IC4A qualifying time of 2:29.79, more than 10 seconds ahead of second place. Andy Ellerhorst came home with a first place finish in the 400-meter dash and a second place finish in the 200-meter dash. His time of 51.67 in the 400-meters places him second all-time. Ed Topolewski placed fifth in the 400 with a time of 53.74.

American's other first place finish came from Chad Young in the 5,000-meter run. His time of 16:24.0 placed him 16 seconds in front of his teammate Matt Barresi who came in second. Barresi's time was 30 seconds better than the third place finisher and places him sixth all-time.

The mile was an extremely close race with the top three finishers being separated by less than a second. Lehigh's Alex L'Heureux edged out American's Sean Duffy and Matt Seymour for the victory. Duffy's time of 4:18.18 moves him into fifth all-time while Seymour's time of 4:18.23 is only one second off of his personal best.

The men’s team return to action on January 27 at the P.G. County Invitational. The meet gets underway at 10:00 a.m.
