American Prepares For Indoor Track Season
Men Picked Sixth, Women Seventh in Pre-Season Poll

Dec. 4, 2001

WASHINGTON — American University’s men’s and women's indoor track teams get their season started this weekend. The men's team was selected sixth and the women seventh in the Patriot League track and field poll, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. The poll was voted on by head coaches and sports information directors of the eight member schools. Army is the nine-time defending Patriot League champion for the men, and Navy won the title last season for the women.

The men’s team will be led by junior All-American Sean O’Brien. He will run events from the 400 to the mile and participate on numerous relays. At the Patriot League meet, O'Brien could face off against Clay Schwabe of Army, another outdoor All-American. Sophomores Frank Malpigli and Matt Seymour will be looked to contribute in the distance events of 3000 meters and 5000 meters. Both Malpigli and Seymour were All-League in cross country and look to earn more honors in track. Andy Ellerhorst and Ed Topolewski will lead the Eagle sprinters this season. Ellerhorst is the school record holder in the 200 and 500 meters indoors and his time in the 500 last season would have earned him third place at the Patriot League meet.

The women's team will be led by junior Samia Akbar and sophomore Jen Baclawski . Akbar holds the school record in the mile and will be looked to score points in a wide range of events this season. Baclawski owns the 3000 meter school record. Another athlete that will help the Eagles in distance events is sophomore Jessica Daniel. She ran the 3000 meters last season and may race in the 5000 meters this year. Sophomore Leah Heinecke-Krumhus and freshman Megan Simpson will be counted on in the middle distance events and relays this season.

The men’s and women’s season begins on Dec. 9 with the Navy Invitational. Men's competition begins at 11:00 a.m. and women's competition gets underway at 3:15 p.m. The Patriot League Championship will be held on Feb. 15 to 17 at Army.
