A Quick Start for Men's Indoor Track
Two American School Records Broken at Navy Invitational

Dec. 8, 2001 | Meet Stats

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — American University’s men’s track team got off to an excellent start for the indoor season Saturday at Navy. Two Eagle records were broken and a number of all-time top-ten performances were turned in by the athletes.

The distance medley team of Jovens Colas, Andy Ellerhorst, Sean Duffy and Sean O'Brien shattered the school record by running 10:03.37 on the way to victory. O'Brien was patient on the mile leg and pulled away from the competition down the strectch. This team is about 15 seconds away from NCAA provisional qualifying. Ellerhorst was not done with rewriting the record book, breaking his own school record in the 200. Ellerhorst ran 23.01 which won the event at the meet.

In the 3000 meters, Matt Seymour ran to victory in an IC4A qualifying time of 8:22.89. This was an excellent start for Seymour's indoor season and he is only 10 seconds away from qualifying for the NCAA championships provisionally.

Chad Young ran a nearly 30 second personal best in the three mile and finished third in the race. His time moves him to third all-time. Ed Topolewski also moved to third all-time by running a 52.44 in the 400-meter dash.

Coach Matt Centrowitz was excited by the performances of the men on Saturday. "We got off to a great start," Centrowitz said. "The relays looked really strong, Seymour ran great and I'm looking forward to the rest of the season after break."

The men’s and women’s teams return to action on January 12 at the George Mason Father Diamond Invitational. The starting time has yet to be announced.
