Seymour Named ECAC Athlete of the Week
American sophomore fifth Eagle to win award this year

April 10, 2002

Matt Seymour won the 1,500-meters at the Maryland Invitational and was named ECAC Men's Track Athlete of the Week

WASHINGTON — American University sophomore Matt Seymour (Rockville, Md./Magruder) was honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) today as Men’s Track Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Maryland Invitational.

Seymour paced the Eagles in the 1,500-meters at Maryland, winning the event as American took the top four spots in the race. His time of 3:54.88 moves him to fourth all-time at American and is a personal best by almost two seconds.

Seymour has had a breakout year so far for the Eagles. In cross country, he placed sixth at the Patriot League Championships and then ninth at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, just missing a trip to the NCAA Championships. In his indoor track season, Seymour won the Navy Invitational in the 3,000-meters in the third fastest time ever run at American (8:22.89). He finished second at the Patriot League Championships in the event, just missing the individual title.

Seymour and the rest of the men’s track team returns to action this weekend at the Navy Invitational. Competition begins at 1:00 p.m on Saturday.

American University is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
