O'Brien, Ellerhorst Set School Records at Rutgers
Eagles perform well in first meet after break

Sean O'Brien set a new school record in the 1000m, winning the event in 2:24.9.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — After a layoff of almost a month, the American University men's track and field team returned to action at the Rutgers Invitational. The Eagles performed well, setting two school records and having putting six additional marks on the all-time top-10.

Sean O'Brien led three AU runners in the top-six in the 1000-meters by winning the event in a school-record time of 2:24.9. O'Brien edged Georgetown's Jesse O'Connell at the finish line. Sean Duffy placed fourth in the race and moved to second all-time with a personal best mark of 2:26.5. Freshman Phil Gaeta ran the third-fastest time in school history in the event, running 2:27.3 to finish sixth.

Also setting a school record at Rutgers was Andy Ellerhorst in the 500-meters. Ellerhorst placed sixth in thre race, running 1:05.6. Gabriel Ajayi was close behind, finishing seventh in 1:06.0 to move to second all-time. Ed Topolewski was also in the event, finishing eighth in 1:09.5.

In the mile, Matt Seymour finished second, running 4:18.5 and Carlos Hunt was third in 4:18.6. Hunt's time moves him to seventh all-time. Pat Burford also ran the mile, running 4:35.5.

In the 3000-meters, Matt Cooke ran a personal-best time of 8:35.6 to finish second and move to ninth all-time at AU. Pat MacAdie was close behind to finish in third and move to 10th all-time in 8:37.6. Also in the 3000m, Frank Malpigli ran a personal best of 8:42.7 to place sixth. Also in the 3000m, Matt Barresi ran 8:56.5, Chris Repka ran 9:04.1 and Will Knox finished in 9:14.6.

In other events, Michael Edwards finished sixth in the 800-meters in a personal-best time of 2:01.6. John Campbell tied for fifth in the 200-meters, running 23.2.

American's next meet is next weekend at the Lehigh Triangular. The meet begins at 11 a.m.
