December 6, 2002

Keira Carlstrom established a new school record in the 3000-meters at the Navy Lidlifter.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — In the first indoor track meet of the season, the American women's track and field squad added eight marks to the all-time top-10 list and freshman Keira Carlstrom set a new school record in the 3000-meters.

Carlstrom placed fourth in the 3000-meters, running 10:01.23, breaking the old school record held by Jen Baclawski by over 24 seconds. Also having a strong meet was sophomore Whitney McNees who improved her personal best time in the mile by almost 10 seconds to 5:17.59 while placing fourth in the meet. Her time is now second fastest all-time at AU.

Running in the 1000-meters, freshman Zaia Wharton and junior Leah Heinecke-Krumhus moved to fourth and fifth respectively all-time at AU in the event. Wharton placed ninth in the meet running 3:08.09 while Heinecke-Krumhus was 11th in 3:12.70.

The Eagles had four freshmen entered in the 200-meter dash and all four made their way onto the all-time top-10. Caitlin Bennett was the first AU finisher, running 28.56 to move to third all-time. Catie Poppe is now fourth all-time after running 28.83. Moving to fifth all-time is Katie Bassler after running 29.88 and Mary McLaughlin is ninth all-time after finishing in 30.64.

American will not compete again until 2003 as the Eagles travel to nearby George Mason for the Father Diamond Invitational.
