Men's Distance Medley Relay Improves Time at Alex Wilson Invitational March 7, 2003
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The American University men's distance medley relay (DMR) ran to a new school record and fifth-place finish at the Alex Wilson Invitational hosted by Notre Dame. The Eagles ran 9:40.22 on the oversized one-fifth of a mile track. AU improved its previous time in the event and currently stands at 10th in the country. The Eagles will receive official word on if they qualified for the NCAA Championships early next week. Sean Duffy ran the leadoff leg for AU, crossing the line in 2:57. Andy Ellerhorst took the baton and split a personal best 47 seconds for his quarter-mile leg. Phil Gaeta also ran a personal best for the half-mile, splitting 1:50. Sean O'Brien anchored the Eagles, running 4:04 for the mile to bring the Eagles home in fifth place. The time of 9:40.22 converts to 9:36.72 for the DMR in meters. This shatters the existing AU record by nearly four seconds. The Eagles now must sit and wait to see if they will qualify for the NCAA Championships held next weekend in Fayetteville, Ark. The official announcement will be made next week.
