Akbar, Carlstrom, Duffy and O'Brien all qualify for NCAA Regional Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. — Running on the track where the Patriot League Outdoor Championships will be held in less than a month, the American University track and field team turned in an impressive performance at the Bison Outdoor Classic Friday evening. Samia Akbar, Keira Carlstrom, Sean Duffy and Sean O'Brien all qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 5000m at the meet.
Akbar and Carlstrom ran away from the field en route to qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships. Akbar won the meet in a school-record time of 16:37.70 while Carlstrom was second while also moving to second all-time at AU in 16:45.72, 45 seconds in front of the third-place finisher. Jen Baclawski placed fourth, running a personal-best time by 28 seconds of 17:35.41. She is now third all-time at American.
O'Brien and Duffy placed one-two in the event, eight seconds in front of third place. O'Brien won the meet in 14:20.03 while Duffy finished in 14:20.52. The duo are now second and third all-time at AU in the 5000m. Both Duffy and O'Brien bettered the NCAA Regional Qualifying time of 14:25.00.
The Eagles track and field season continues tomorrow at the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson meet hosted by the University of Virginia.
