American Volleyball To Face Colorado in NCAA Tournament
Eagles head to Fort Collins, Colo., for its third-ever appearance

WASHINGTON — The American volleyball team will play Colorado this Friday, Nov. 30, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament (bracket) on the campus of Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. The 2001 Eagles earned its first berth since the 1998 season after defeating Army, 3-1, on Nov. 18 for the Patriot League Championship title.

American’s current record stands at 26-3, 14-0 in the Patriot League. The Eagles entered the Patriot League Championship as the No. 1 seed, having defeated each league foe in straight games (3-0) in both meetings during the regular season.

Head coach Barry Goldberg, in his 13th year at American, is leading a youthful Eagle squad to the program's third trip to the national tournament.

American’s last appearance at the NCAA Tournament was in 1998 when the Eagles went 29-6 overall and 14-1 in its former conference, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). The team was elimated in the first round by No. 23 Louisville in Louisville, Ky.

The Eagles stand at 0-2 all-time in NCAA Tourament play, having dropped their opening round match in 1997 to No. 21 Colorado State.

American University, which is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League, officially joined the conference on July 1. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
