AU Volleyball Breaks From Pack, Beats Lehigh 3-0
Eagles serve up balanced attack in Patriot League battle

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The American University volleyball team established a true lead in the battle of the regular season Patriot League title Friday night, downing Lehigh University 3-0 by scores of 30-19, 30-12, 30-17. Prior to the match, the Eagles and the Mountain Hawks were both perfect in league play with a 4-0 record as AU improved to 13-6 overall and 5-0 in PL action and Lehigh is now 12-9 overall and 4-1 in the league.

As a team, American hit .451 compared with Lehigh's .033 mark, reaching 45 kills to LU's total of 25. The Eagles also landed 12 service aces to the Mountain Hawks' three.

Sophomore Cathy Fluegeman (Muncie, Ind./Burris Laboratory School) produced a game-high 10 kills while hitting over 52 percent and junior Karla Kucerkova (Olomouc, Czech Republic/Brno) stood out with nine kills and six digs.

Also holding their own offensively were freshman Cutrina Biddulph (Reseda, Calif./Granada Hills) and senior Judit Szekelyhidi (Ujszentiva, Hungary/Szegedian Club), who combined for 18 kills and 10 digs. Biddulph also added six blocks. Sophomore Courtney Mulford (San Diego, Calif./La Costa Canyon) executed the AU offense with 30 assists and six kills of her own.

For Lehigh, Jeanette Singleton and Rochelle Healea tied for team-highs with seven kills while Lisa Furusawa had 17 sets.

The Eagles take on their sixth Patriot League opponent of the season - Lafayette - Saturday night at 7 p.m.
