WASHINGTON -- Finishing off with an ace in the fourth game, the American University volleyball team defeated Bucknell University Saturday night 3-1 at Bender Arena. Scores of the individual games were 30-11, 30-15, 28-30, 30-27.
With the victory, the Eagles are now 11-0 in the Patriot League and 20-6 overall. Already qualified for the Patriot League Championships next month, AU will host Lehigh and Lafayette next weekend. The Eagles are the only Patriot League team to take a match from the Mountain Hawks in 2002.
For the second time this season, the Bison forced a Game 4 with American after getting steamrolled in the first two games. AU went on a 14-3 run to lead 22-8 before sophomore Cathy Fluegeman pounded out the final point down the right line. The Eagles hit an impressive .552 in the first game and .357 on the night.
Courtney Mulford opened the second game with two aces in three tries for a 7-1 lead. The Bison struggled to find their offense, finishing this one with an attack error into the net.
Whatever was missing from in its first two games appeared in the final two as Bucknell fought back hard, taking an early 12-7 lead behind the strong play of Melanie Ghiz, who had a team-high 14 kills. AU trailed throughout the game but attempted to make it in three when freshman Cutrina Biddulph blocked its 27th point and junior Karla Kucerkova tipped in 28.
It was much of the same in the final game before American tied it up at 15-all with a BU attack error. One of Biddulph's 12 kills made it 23-22 for the final lead change.
Kucerkova finished with a game-high 20 kills and 11 digs and senior Judit Szekelyhidi added 17 kills and eight digs.
Mulford tipped the 1,000 assist scale with her 34 and Sabrina Vasconcelos added 12 assists and two service aces. Fluegeman had four of AU's 12 aces.
