Arben Gjino begins his first season as an AU assistant coach after three
seasons as a graduate assistant coach with the program. He recently earned
a master's degree in health and fitness from American University.
Gjino brings a wealth of experience as both a coach and a referee of international
volleyball to the Eagles' program.
A graduate of the University of Tirana in Albania, Gjino earned his degree
in physical education with an emphasis on volleyball. He has attended
numerous seminars on international refereeing and volleyball coaching.
After graduating from Tirana in 1983, Gjino was a high school physical
education teacher until 1992.
From 1992-96, Gjino served as an assistant professor at the University
of Tirana where he taught volleyball theory and practice to professional
level athletes. He served as the program leader of the first-ever beach
volleyball championship team in his native Albania. As a youngster, he
was a member of his country's Junior National Team and "17 Nentori"
team from 1978-1986.
He was a registered referee with the Albanian Volleyball Federation, the
International Federation (FIVB) and the European Federation of Volleyball.
In 1997, Gjino served as a collegiate Division I referee in the United
States. He was also an assistant volleyball coach at National Cathedral
High School in Washington, D.C., prior to his arrival at American.
Gjino currently resides in Washington, D.C., with his wife Olympia, and
son, Leonard.
