American
Falls to Marist, 73-65, in Womens Basketball November 28, 2001
Katryn Costenbader scored 17 points and pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds and Hollie Steinman added 16 points and 10 rebounds. It was the fourth win of the season for American, tying its season total from a year ago. Trailing by four (55-51) with 7:25 to play in the contest, American (4-1) used an 11-2 spurt over the next six minutes to take a 62-57 lead, and it never looked back. Costenbader and Steinman each scored four points during the decisive run to help seal the win. Neither team was extremely sharp this evening, as Iona (0-3) turned the ball over 21 times, and the Eagles 20. American (4-1) held an early 10-3 advantage, but following a quick Iona timeout, saw the Gaels fight back to tie the game at 21 with 7:51 to play in the first half. Iona, on the strength of a 9-0 run, would go on to grab a five-point lead with 5:24 to play in the opening stanza. The Eagles clawed
their way back, using a 10-2 spurt of their own. Two free throws and a
layup by Steinman and two more free throws by Kaitlin
Schuyler boosted the Eagles back on top, 32-28, with 1:49 to play.
A three-pointer by Iona's Laura Schaech cut the margin to 32-31 heading
into the lockerroom. Schuyler added nine points, four assists and two steals for the Eagles, while Damarah Rhymer and Kim Salem each netted seven points off the bench. Iona was led by Megan Cobb with 14 points, while Michelle Fahy added 11 points and tied for game rebounding honors with 15. American, in the midst of a three-game homestand against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schools, returns to action on Wednesday, Nov 28, when it hosts Marist at 6:00 p.m. in Bender Arena. The Eagles then face Rider on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 3:30 p.m.
