Hunt Grabs Patriot League Rookie of the Week Honors
Freshman records back-to-back 20+ scoring games in 2-0 week

February 11, 2002

Freshman Chanel Hunt was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week after recording a career-high 26 points in the Eagles' win over Lafayette on Feb. 9.

WASHINGTON -- Following a week in which the American University women’s basketball went 2-0 and extended its winning streak to four straight, freshman Chanel Hunt (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday, marking the first time an Eagle has earned the honor this season.

Hunt had a career week, twice surpassing her career-high in points and blocking a last second shot at Lafayette that allowed the Eagles to escape with a two-point victory.

The 6-0 forward recorded a team-high 20 points off the bench, then a career-high, along with seven rebounds and two blocked shots to help American avenge an early season loss to Army with a 76-66 victory at West Point on Wednesday. The rookie wasn’t done, however, coming off the bench again at Lafayette and notching new career-highs in points (26), rebounds (10), steals (six) and blocks (four), while swatting Lindsey Myers’ shot with two seconds left for the 63-61 Eagle win.

American has recorded consecutive Patriot League wins over Navy, Colgate, Army and Lafayette, and remains in fourth place in the league at 6-4 heading into its game at Bucknell (8-2) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

American University became a full member of the Patriot League on July 1 after competing in the Colonial Athletic Association since the 1985-86 academic year.

Founded in 1893, American fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
