Hold On To Edge Iona, 68-64 November 30, 2002
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Chanel Hunt had her second consecutive double-double as American University's women's basketball team held off Iona, 68-64. Hunt led four Eagles in double figures with a season-high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Neither team shot particularly well from the floor, but the Eagles (3-1) shot 88 percent from the foul line while the Gaels (0-3) only shot 59 percent. After an AU timeout as the Eagles trailed 11-8 in the first half, American went on a 16-2 run to open an 11 point lead. Kaitlin Schuyler and Maria Werries combined for 14 of AU's 16 points during this stretch as the Eagles seized control of the first half. However, AU would go scoreless over the next four minutes to allow the Gaels back in the game as Iona cut the lead to three. As the teams went to the half, American had brought the lead back up to four points, 27-23. AU opened the second half with six straight points to get the lead up to 10. Iona stormed back, holding the Eagles to only two points over the next four minutes to tie the game at 35 with just over 13 minutes to play. An old-fashioned three-point play by Hunt put AU in the lead as the Eagles were able to build a six-point lead after two free throws by Schuyler with seven minutes remaining. The Gaels would not go away as Lauren Schaech gave Iona a five point lead after hitting back-to-back three-pointers. The Eagles chipped away at the lead, and reclaimed it with 2:41 to play on a basket by Hunt. AU received a huge boost as Michelle Fahy fouled out for Iona with 1:43 to play after scoring a game-high 25 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. With the Eagles up three, Sheena Howard went one-for-two on a trip to the foul line. A turnaround jumper by Jenyce Woodruff with under a minute to play gave AU a four point advantage. The Eagles were seven-for-eight from the foul line in the final five minutes to help ice the victory. Joining Hunt in double figures was Werries who netted 14 points and Schuyler and Woodruff who each added 12. Woodruff's 12 points is a career-high and she also grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. The Eagles next game is Sunday as AU continues its New York swing at Marist. Tip-off is at 2 p.m.
