WORCESTER, Mass. A poor first half doomed the American University's women's basketball team (14-10, 7-4 PL) as Holy Cross (17-7, 9-1 PL) defeated the Eagles, 65-55. AU was led by Kaitlin Schuyler's 14 points while Chanel Hunt had her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

After a Hunt basket to open the game, the Crusaders went on an 11-2 run to open a seven-point advantage. Baskets by Hunt kept the Eagles in the game as she had seven of AU's first eight points. After Holy Cross stretched the lead back to eight, Schuyler drained a three-pointer to bring the Eagles back within five.

The Crusaders extended their lead up to 12 thanks to seven free throws. Hunt, who had 10 of AU's 16 first-half points, scored again to cut the lead to 10, but a Sarah Placek three gave Holy Cross a 29-16 advantage. The 16 points were the lowest point total in a half this season for the Eagles as AU shot only 27 percent from the floor and committed 20 turnovers.

The second half did not start well for the Eagles as Holy Cross stretched the lead to 39-18. After Head Coach Shann Hart cleared the bench, the Crusaders scored another basket before AU began to come back. A 13-4 Eagle run keyed by seven points from Katryn Costenbader brough AU within 11.

Holy Cross responded with an 8-0 run of their own as the Eagles could not score for nearly six minutes. A Schuyler three-pointer ended the drought and AU climbed back to within 12 at 53-41. However, AU could not close the gap and Holy Cross scored their last 12 points from the free-throw line to clinch the game.

AU only shot 34.4 percent from the floor for the game and were outrebounded, 41-38, by the Crusaders. The Eagles also committed 28 turnovers in the game.

The Eagles next game is on Sunday at Colgate. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
