AU Women's Basketball Coach Shann Hart Resigns

March 26, 2004

WASHINGTON American University Women’s Basketball head coach Shann Hart has resigned after four years to pursue other coaching opportunities. Hart concluded the 2003-2004 season by leading the Eagles to a 16-14 record, a second-place regular season finish, and a place in the Patriot League Championship game. It was just the third championship game appearance for the American University women’s basketball program.

Her four-year record at AU was 50-63, which included an 18-11 record in 2002-2003 (fifth best winning percentage in school history) and a 26-16 record in three years of Patriot League play. Each year under Coach Hart’s helm, at least eight players made the conference all-academic team, the team G.P.A. increased, and 100% of student-athletes who completed their eligibility graduated.

“We thank Shann Hart for her four years of service to AU women’s basketball,” said Dr. Joni Comstock, Director of Athletics. “We appreciate her commitment to our athletics program and wish her well into the future.” AU will soon launch a national search for a new coach for the women’s team.

Hart came to American University in 2000 after leading St. Mary’s College (Maryland) to three 20-win seasons during her four-season tenure. A graduate of Norfolk State University, Hart is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors and the Black Coaches Association.

The American University athletics program fields 19 sports (10 women’s and nine men’s sports), and is a member of the Patriot League. Located in Washington, D.C., AU enrolls more than 11,000 full- and part-time students in its six schools and colleges.
