American Women’s Lacrosse Defeated by UMBC, 15-11
McCarthy scores two goals and adds an assist in loss

Nicole McCarthy had two goals and an assist in addition to six ground balls and three caused turnovers against UMBC.

WASHINGTON — The American University women’s lacrosse team dropped its second straight game to Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC) today by a score of 15-11. Sophomore Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) scored two goals and added an assist for the Eagles. American drops to 5-5 on the season (3-1 Patriot League). UMBC moves to 3-4 (1-0 NEC).

For the second game in a row, the Eagles fell behind early as Stephanie Allen scored for UMBC just 49 seconds into the game. UMBC scored two more goals before American finally got on the board at the 20:12 mark with a goal by Jamie Crean (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore). Lauren Traber scored two of her four goals for UMBC towards the end of the first half to up the Retriever lead to 5-1. Hillary Flanagan (Northport, N.Y./Bay Shore) and Tara Michael (Davidsonville, Md./South River) each scored before halftime to close the UMBC lead to two.

The Retrievers opened up a lead of 12-6 with just under ten minutes to play in the game. American then staged a ferocious rally as the Eagles attempted to comeback on UMBC. Becky Copeland (Webster, N.Y./Webster) started the rally with a goal which was quickly followed by a score by Lindsay Cartin (West Chester, Pa./Henderson). American scored two more goals before Ashley Staines scored to stop the Eagle run. Courtney Bennett (McLean, Va./McLean) found the net to get the deficit back to three with just over three minutes to play, but Jen Dragoni scored her fourth goal of the game to clinch the UMBC win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Randisi (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) stopped 14 shots for the Eagles while Courtney Stringer saved 17 for UMBC. McCarthy, who is third in the nation in ground balls and caused turnovers, had six ground balls and three caused turnovers in the game to go along with her two goals and assist. Nadia Harmsen (Buzzards Bay, Mass./Tabor Academy) had a goal and nine ground balls in the game. American’s next game is April 7 against St. Joseph’s at Reeves Field at 1:00 p.m.
