Eagles Drop Heartbreaker to UMBC, 13-12
Retrievers score with 16 seconds left to capture first victory

March 30, 2004 | Stats

Junior Rebecca Copeland scored four goals, but it wasn't enough for the Eagles in a 13-12 loss to UMBC Tuesday.

WASHINGTON — The University of Maryland-Baltimore County’s Kelly Fahey scored with just 16 seconds left and American University could not answer as the Retrievers came away from Reeves Field Tuesday with a 13-12 win.

AU trailed 12-10 after UMBC’s Lauren Hess tallied an unassisted goal with 2:46 left. However, the Eagles responded when Tara Michael (Owings, Md./South River) and Rebecca Copeland (Webster, N.Y./Webster) scored 15 seconds apart -- the fourth goal of the game for each -- to knot things up at 12 with 2:06 remaining in regulation.

The Retrievers won the ensuing draw control and worked the ball around until Fahey emerged from an unsettled situation to bury the game-winner.

American had held leads of 6-5 at the half and 8-5 six minutes into the second period, but UMBC ripped off five consecutive goals between the 22:44 mark and the 13:22 mark of the second stanza. The Retrievers Jen Dragoni chipped in a goal and an assist during that run, and she finished the game with three goals and one assist.

UMBC won its first game of the season, in eight tries, despite trailing in ground balls, 22-10. However, the Retrievers fired 17 second-half shots to lead that category, 27-26.

Michael led AU with four goals and two assists, while both Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) and Moriah Linnell (Antrim, N.H./Contoocook Valley) contributed a goal and an assist for the Eagles, who fall to 4-5 on the season. McCarthy added four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

The Eagles will look to rebound this weekend when they travel to Philadelphia to square off against Patriot League foe Villanova on Saturday at 1 p.m.
