Women's Lacrosse Loses to Old Dominion, 15-8 McCarthy's four points not enough to overcome IWLCA preseason No. 19 Lady Monarchs March 6, 2004 | Stats
WASHINGTON — Old Dominion’s Suzanne Wosczyna scored seven goals and added two assists in a 15-8 win over American University Saturday at Reeves Field. AU hung with the Lady Monarchs early, knotting the score at two a piece at the 24:30 mark of the first period on a goal by senior attacker Courtney Bennett (McLean, Va./McLean). However, ODU, ranked 19th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association preseason poll, scored the next three goals to take a 5-2 lead at halftime. ODU opened the second stanza by scoring five of the next seven goals to take a commanding six-goal lead. AU threatened again, however, with goals by freshman Caitlin Gorman (Springfield, Va./Bishop Ireton) and senior Nicole McCarthy (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield), but the Lady Monarchs regained control by scoring the game’s next two goals. In addition to Wosczyna, ODU’s Melody Shotwell scored three goals and added two assists. Lady Monarch goaltender Michelle Gannon made nine saves for the win. The game was the season-opener for Old Dominion. AU was led by McCarthy, who tallied two goals and two assists. Gorman and Bennett added two goals a piece. The Eagles drop to 0-2 on the season, and return to action Monday, March 8, against Duquesne on their spring break trip to Orlando, Fla.
