Michael, Gorman Honored by the Patriot League
Women's lacrosse players tabbed for their performances in a 13-6 win over Holy Cross Saturday

April 19, 2004

Senior Tara Michael held Trish Sutton, the Patriot League's leading scorer, to just two assists on Saturday to earn the PL's Defensive Player of the Week award.

WASHINGTON — American University women’s lacrosse players Caitlin Gorman (Springfield, Va./Bishop Ireton) and Tara Michael (Owings, Md./South River) have been named the Patriot League’s Freshman of the Week and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their performances in a 13-6 win over Holy Cross on Saturday, Patriot League officials announced Monday.

Michael was lauded for virtually shutting down the Crusaders’ Trish Sutton, the Patriot League’s leading scorer, on Saturday. Sutton came in averaging 4.57 points per game, but tallied only two assists while being marked by Michael. Michael finished the day with three caused turnovers, three ground balls, three draw controls and two goals.

On the season, Michael leads the Eagles with 28 caused turnovers and 38 ground balls. The 5-7 senior’s 28 caused turnovers this season are tied for the fifth-most in a single season at AU, and her 76 career caused turnovers rank her third in school history. In addition, Michael is ranked sixth in AU history in ground balls, with 128. No slouch on the offensive end, Michael is the Eagles’ second-leading scorer, with 39 points on 26 goals and 13 assists in 2004.

Freshman Caitlin Gorman nabbed the Patriot League's Freshman of the Week award.

Gorman scored two goals, on just three shots, in the win Saturday. The local product, from nearby Springfield, Va., has scored 13 goals thus far, the eighth-best goal-scoring output by a freshman in the 13 seasons AU has sponsored women’s lacrosse. In addition, Gorman is just three points from breaking into AU’s top-10 single-season points by a freshman.

The Eagles (7-6, 5-0 Patriot League) face a key Patriot League battle this Saturday, April 24, as they travel to Colgate (10-4, 5-0 PL) for a 1 p.m. start. The winner will be the Patriot League regular season champion and will earn the right to host the PL Tournament on May 1-2. American is the defending PL champions, and is coming off a season in which they made their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.
