Pa. native ranked 5th in latest AWN Poll at 149 pounds

American University's Marc Hoffer (R-Jr., Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) is ranked 5th in the nation at 149 pounds in the Feb. 14 Amateur Wrestling News (AWN) poll. It is the highest an AU wrestler has been ranked in the program's history. Hoffer also held the previous highest ranking for an Eagles' wrestler when he was 7th in the Dec. 12, 2000 AWN poll.

Hoffer is 28-1 overall on the season and a perfect 12-0 in dual meets. Also, on Jan. 29, Hoffer upset Hofstra's Eric Schmeising, who at the time was ranked 5th in the nation, at the prestigious National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic at Franklin and Marshall College. In addition, Hoffer's 88 career wins ranks third in AU history.

At the Penn State Open on Dec. 3, Hoffer was named the "Most Outstanding Wrestler" after going 5-0 in the tournament and pinning George Carter of Bloomsburg at 3:45 in the 149 pound final. The win at Penn State was Hoffer's third title of the season. Earlier this season, he won at the Keystone Classic at the University of Pennsylvania and again at the West Virginia University Open.

The 1999 CAA "Wrestler of the Year" and CAA tournament "Most Outstanding Wrestler," Hoffer posted a 35-10 overall mark in 1998-99. He was 12-1 in dual meets that season and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1999 NCAA Tournament, farther than any wrestler in the history of American University. In April 1999, Hoffer placed third at the Fila Junior World Team Trials and, in June of that year, traveled to Europe as part of the USA team.
