Wrestlers Out of NCAA Tournament
Hoffer finishes
season 29-3. AU wrestlers Marc Hoffer (R-Jr., 149 pounds, Manheim, PA/Manheim Central), Denis Alampiev (Sr., 165, Nizhnevartovsk, Russia/Waynesboro, PA) and Ryan Pallinger (Sr., 197, Avon Lake, OH/Avon Lake) were eliminated from the NCAA championship after each losing two bouts. Hoffer, battling the flu, dropped a 6-4 decision to Boise State's Collin Robertson in his opening match on Thursday. The tournament's #5 seed, Hoffer then fell to Tommy Davis of NC State, 6-2, in the first "wrestle-back" later in the day. Alampiev posted AU's lone win of the championship as he defeated Greg Francesca of Virginia, 7-6, in Thursday's first round. Alampiev then met second seeded Joe Heskett of Iowa State and lost a 9-2 decision. In wrestle-backs on Friday, Alampiev lost to 12th seeded Ian Nelms of Cal-Bakersfield, 7-5, in sudden-death. Pallinger dropped a tough 7-6 decision to Babak Nejadmaghaddem of Cal. State in the first round and lost to Boise State's Rusty Cook, the #4 seed, by fall (3:55) in wrestle-backs on Thursday.
