American Wrestling Opens 2001-02 Dual Meet Season Versus George Mason
Hoffer records 100th career win in match

WASHINGTON -- American University senior Marc Hoffer (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Central) recorded his 100th career win tonight in American wrestling’s home opener versus George Mason. The Patriots (1-0) defeated the Eagles (0-1), 38-6.

Hoffer had a 3-2 decision over Mason’s Adrian Austin (Colonial Heights, Va./Matoaca) in the 149 lbs. class to earn his 100th win in competition at American University. He sits at No. 2 overall on American’s all-time wins list with a 100-27 overall record, and is on pace to break the current all-time record of 105-33-1 held by Chris Toth. In a Dec. 4 poll, InterMat ranked Hoffer 14th in the nation at 149 lbs.

George Mason’s Richard Appau (Richmond, Va./Douglass S. Freeman) opened the night with a major decision over American’s Aviv Bercovicz (Wauside, N.J./Cean Township) at 165 lbs. The Eagles’ Aaron Baker (Amarillo, Tex./Tacosa) responded at 174 lbs., defeating P.J. Ross (Saltsburg, Pa./Kiski Prep) by a score of 8-2, almost recording a pin near the end of the second period.

Mason went on a 6-0 run after the loss by Ross, including one pin by Aaron Suranofsky (Northampton, Pa./Northampton Area) over American’s Matthew Pelligrino (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) at 125 lbs., and one technical fall by Rob Becker (Mickelton, N.J./Clearview Regional) over Victor Acquaah-Harrison (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) in the 141 lbs. match. Hoffer notched American’s second win at 149 lbs. and Mason’s Chad Sheidegger (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) closed out the night at 157 lbs. with a defeat of Eric Fantegrossi (Needham, Mass./Needham).

The Eagles move to 0-1 on the season. They will travel to the Kent State Invitational this Sunday, Dec. 9, and will then participate in the Midlands tournament on the weekend of Dec. 28-29. American’s next dual meet will be on Wednesday, Jan. 9, when it hosts Delaware State in Bender Arena at 7:00 p.m.
