Hoffer
Advances to Quarterfinals Before Falling to No. 1 Seed at Midlands Tournament EVANSTON, ILL. -- After grappling through rounds two and three, American senior Marc Hoffer (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Central) fell by major decision (15-6) in the quarterfinals to Jared Lawrence from Minnesota at this weekend's Midlands Tournament held at Northwestern University. Lawrence was the No. 1 seed in the 149 lbs. weight class at the tournament while Hoffer entered the weekend as the No. 9 seed. Hoffer is also currently ranked as InterMat's No. 16 wrestler in the nation at 149. After a first-round bye, Hoffer defeated Tim Loeffel of Eastern Illinois University in the second with a 12-4 major decision. He then grappled Matt Gentry from Stanford to a 8-6 decision before falling to Lawrence. Hoffer would later forfeit his consolation match to the No. 10 seed, Karl Nadolsky, from Michigan State. No. 1 seed Lawrence continues to dominate at the tournament, defeating the No. 5 seed, Jesse Jantzen of Harvard, by a 4-0 decision in the semifinals. He will grapple the No. 2 seed, Mike Zadick, from Iowa, in the 149 lbs. finals match. The
Midlands Tournament has
been a traditional indicator of a team's postseason performance, as many
team winners at Midlands have later won their conference titles and many
times the NCAA title.
