BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Junior Jared Hyman captured fourth place in the heavyweight division Saturday in the American University wrestling team's 2002-03 season opener at the Bearcat Open hosted by SUNY-Binghamton.

Hyman beat Jeremy Wampler of Millersville and advanced past Binghamton's Jon Gregg by way of a medical forfeit. He then beat Millersville's Sean Kelly, 10-2 before losing to Boston University's Courtney Howard, 12-10.

"Jared showed a lot of heart coming back for the third and fourth-place match," said assistant coach Shawn Enright. "We were impressed by his mental toughness this weekend."

Junior Matt Pelligrino (1-2) defeated Mike Graber, 18-5, at 125 lbs., but lost his next two including a 3-1 decision to Mike Collins in the consolation round. At 141-lbs., freshman Tom Kniezewski scored his first collegiate win, a major decision over Eric Dicapua, 22-7, and also defeated teammate Daniel Lobsenz in the consolation round, 10-2. Kniezewski saw his run end to Brown's Clint Frease, 14-6.

Eric Fantegrossi earned a win over Sacred Heart's Gregory Cappello at 149 lbs., but fell in his next bout to Brown's David Saaseh, 10-3. AU's Aaron Baker also took home a win over Messiah's Joe Chidley, but lost to Terrier Ton Sforza, 5-4 in the 165-lbs. division.

The Eagles are in action this weekend when they travel to the Cornell Invitational.
