American
Wrestling Takes Ninth at Cornell Invitational

ITHACA, N.Y.
-- The American University wrestling team finished ninth at the 2002 Body
Bar Invitational at Cornell University Saturday.
The hosting Big Red captured first with 171 points followed by Edinboro
with 162.50 and Oregon at third with 115.50 points. Army (98), Virginia
(97.50), Drexel (93), Sacred Heart (51.50) and Ithaca (36) rounded out
the scoring before the Eagles’ 22.50 final.
At 149 pounds, junior Aviv
Bercovicz (Ocean, N.J./Ocean Township) defeated Army’s Eggleston,
9-4, and beat Virginia’s Hartey, 5-3, before losing to Sacred Heart’s
Laramee, 3-2. Bercovicz lost in the first round of consolation. Sophomore
Kyle Mason (Mechanicsburg,
Pa./Mechanicsburg) advanced to the semifinals of the 184-lb. division
with a 14-6 win over Derek Venne in the first round. He followed that
up with a fall at 4:47 over Oregon’s Elias Soto before losing to
Alex Celmson of Edinboro, at 6:27.
Freshman Daniel Lobsenz
(Fairfield, Conn./Choate) earned a win at the 133-lb. division over Sacred
Heart’s Henry Rubright with a fall at 6:15 before losing in the
second round to Sykar Woods of Oregon, 15-5. He lost in the first round
of consolation to Army’s Patrick Simpson by technical fall. Another
AU freshman Tom Kniezewski
(Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) defeated Sacred Heart’s Jason Miele,
14-5, before losing to division finalist Ron Doppelheur of Edinboro, 13-3,
at 141-lbs.
