WASHINGTON -- The American womens soccer program tied for the sixth-most improved Division I team in 2001, as announced by soccerbuzz.com, after finishing with a 7-7-3 record (4-3-1 Patriot League) in 2001. The Eagles improved from a 2-13-2 record in 2000 (5.5 game improvement) and advanced to the Patriot League Championships as the No. 2 seed before falling, 2-1, to Bucknell in the semifinals. The Eagles tied for sixth place among most improved teams with Alabama, Central Florida and Oregon. Campbell University finished as the most improved program in 2001 using the NCAA standard for calculating a teams change in record from the previous year. Soccerbuzz.com also ranked Division I womens soccer programs using traditional calculations; under this measurement, American finished as the fifth-most improved team in 2001 (132.4 percent improvement). Head coach Michael Brady (American '92) holds a 9-20-5 career record at American after his second year at the helm of the womens program. Under his guidance, the womens soccer team earned American Universitys first-ever win in the Patriot League on Sept. 19, 2001, with a 1-0 defeat of Navy in Annapolis, Md. American University,
which is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League, officially
joined the conference on July 1. The University, founded in 1893, fields
a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 womens sports
and nine for men.
