Laraque Earns Rookie of the Week Award
American women's soccer notches third Patriot League award on the season

October 15 , 2001

Washington, D.C. -- American University’s Fedjah Laraque (East Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) was tabbed by the Patriot League today for the Rookie of the Week award after scoring the game-winning goal at Army in the Eagles 3-1 victory this Saturday.

After an Army foul in the box, Laraque pounded a penalty kick into the far right corner of the net to put American on top of the Red Knights, 2-1. The score marked Laraque's second game-winning goal this season. Her first game-winner came against Bucknell on Sept. 22, when the Eagles edged the Bisons, 2-0.

Laraque has 17 shots on goal, the second-highest number on the team. She has two goals (both game-winners) and an assist on the season.

Laraque's game-winner propelled the Eagles to their third Patriot League win and sixth overall win. American now sits at second place in the Patriot League and will play three games in the next six days, including their next match at UMBC this Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. American then plays host to Old Dominion on Friday, Oct. 19 at 3:00 p.m. on Reeves Field before traveling to Worcester, Mass. for a game at Holy Cross on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1:00 p.m.

American University, which is in its inaugural year as a member of the Patriot League, officially joined the conference on July 1. The University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men.
