Freshman Simon Konig scored the Eagles lone goal in a 1-1 tie with Loyola College

WASHINGTON — The American University women’s soccer team tied the two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions Loyola College 1-1 Wednesday at Reeves Field in its first preseason scrimmage of the 2002 season. Freshman Simone Konig (Gartringen/School of Economic in Boblingen) soared a free kick from the left side off a defender and into the far right corner in the final minutes of the first half as the lone goal for AU.

The Eagles, who finished 7-7-3 overall and 4-2-1 in Patriot League action last year, got off to a slow start as the Greyhounds recorded three quick shots within the first five minutes before Konig rung a bullet off the crossbar on a give-and-go.

Loyola retaliated late in the second half at the 79:42 mark when a cross from the left flank tangled up American goaltender Stefanie Gillman (Merrick, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), resulting in a one-touch shot into the lower left corner of the net for the 1-1 knot.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) played the first half for American, registering three saves in the process.

Junior Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) kept the pressure on Greyhound goalkeeper Erica Niemann (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) with three shots. Junior transfer Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area/Bucknell) was a force on the front line, connecting for a pair of shots.

American hosts Delaware at Reeves Field on Saturday at 4 p.m. following the men’s soccer match with William & Mary at 1 p.m.
