Blue Hens Top Eagles in Exhibition, 2-1
Junior Rennels Scores Lone Goal forAU

Aug. 24, 2002

Savannah Rennels scored AU's only goal in a 2-1 exhibition loss to Delaware.

WASHINGTON — The American women’s soccer team looked to be in control late in the second half following junior Savannah Rennel’s (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area/Bucknell) unassisted goal, but Delaware broke the 1-1 tie on a short breakaway with 10 minutes left to cinch a 2-1 exhibition win Saturday at Reeves Field.

Freshman Molly Sherman (Annundale, Va./Annundale) capitalized on a 10-yard breakaway up the right center and placed a shot just out of reach of AU goalkeeper Stefanie Gillman (Merrick, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) for the gamewinner.

The Eagles trailed as early as 18:25 in the first half when senior Brittany Campbell (Newtown, Pa./Notre Dame H.S.) headed a cross from junior Ginette Buffone (Enfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee School) from the right flank past a diving Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) for the 1-0 advantage.

With 20 minutes left in the game, Rennels rocketed a shot at Delaware goaltender Lindsay Shover (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor), who mishandled the ball as it bounced off the goalpost, back at Shover and into the left corner of the net.

Delaware outshot American by a 13-10 margin and committed 10 fouls to AU’s eight.

Playing well defensively for the Eagles were seniors Sara Jagare (Uppsala, Sweden/William Carey) and Megan Monteith (Fredricksburg, Va./Chancellor).

American kicks off its 2002 season versus Richmond at the Richmond Tournament on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
