Oct. 14, 2002 WASHINGTON - American University’s Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) earned the Patriot League Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honor after she held the Naval Acaemy to just one goal on 22 shots last Sunday (October 13th). Her performance helped the Eagles earn a 1-1 tie with Navy. For Liese, the 15 saves tops her previous best of 12, which she had against Navy in 2001 and Richmond this season. In yesterday’s game Liese played well for the entire double overtime (110 minutes), but her best moment came with 6:22 left in the second OT when she stopped Navy’s Kara Hardebeck from point-blank range. The save was her 13th of the afternoon, and her most dramatic. The Midshipmen entered the game averaging three goals per game. AU’s tie this weekend with Navy left them with a 4-6-2 overall record and 0-1-1 in Patriot League play. AU will host Georgetown this Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) and then go back into league play this weekend when Lehigh comes to town on Sunday (2:30 p.m.). American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, recently completed its inaugural year of membership in the Patriot League. The University had an extremely successful year to date on respective fields of play, capturing league championships in men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis and women’s tennis, and regular-season titles in men’s basketball and women’s lacrosse. Chartered by an Act
of Congress in 1893, American University features students from all 50
states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
