Oct. 14, 2002 WASHINGTON - American University’s Simone Konig (Gartringen/Germany/School of Economics in Boblingen) earned the Patriot League Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week honor after her standout performance helped the Eagles to a 1-1 tie against an unbeaten Navy squad. Navy drew first blood, scoring a goal 20 minutes into the game. However, a few minutes later Konig found Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area/Bucknell) open near the goal. One deft pass later, and the Eagles had tied the game up. Konig led AU in shots on goal against Navy with four, and her last shot in the second overtime was close to a game-winner. Just 12 games into her collegiate career Konig has certainly made her presence felt at both American and in the Patriot League. Her seven assists on the year ties her for first (Liz Pike - 1990) for assists in a season as a freshman. She only needs three additional assists in the last five regular season games to set the AU record for assists in a year (Liz Pike had 9 in 1993). She leads the league in assists per game with 0.58 per game. AU’s tie with
Navy left them with a 4-6-2 overall record and 1-1-1 in Patriot League
play. The Eagles will play Georgetown on Thursday (October 17th at 3:00
p.m.) and will then go back into league play this weekend when Lehigh
comes to town on Sunday (2:30 p.m.). Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University features students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and more than 160 nations worldwide.
