George Mason Edges AU
Aug. 23, 2003 FAIRFAX, Va. — American University Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) and Simone Konig (Gartringen/School of Economics) each had two excellent shots on goal, but neither could find the back of the net. The Eagles lost to George Mason in the final scrimmage of the preseason by a goal, 1-0. Head coach Michael Brady was able to get all 23 players into the game and freshmen Kristie Fontana (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) and Christina Gonzalez (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream Central) both started and each had one shot on goal. Sophomore Lena Winkler (Denver, Colo./St. Mary’s Academy) also had a pair of shots on goal from the backfield. In the first of three 30-minute periods AU outshot the Patriots 4-2, and for the game held a 8-7 edge. However, George Mason’s Sarah Wilkinson headed the ball in the second period for the lone goal of the game. The Eagles played all three goalkeepers and each had one save. AU will open up the 2003 campaign on the road at Mount St. Mary’s on Friday, August, 29 at 4:00 p.m. The Eagles have 13 letterwinners and six starters back from last year’s Patriot League championship squad and have added 11 newcomers.
