Former Eagle Named Girl’s Soccer Coach of the Year by Post
AU Women’s Soccer All-Star Collects the Prestigious Award

June 28, 2001

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Former American University women’s soccer standout
Liz Pike ’94 was recently named the 2001 Girl’s High School Soccer Coach of the Year by the Washington Post.

The all-time leading scorer at AU, Pike earned the prestigious nod by leading the girls’ varsity soccer team at Lake Braddock High School (Burke, Va.) to a 14-3 overall record and a trip to the AAA Patriot District Championship game.

Pike and her Bruins fell to West Springfield High, 2-1, in the district title game, but advanced to the Northern Region semifinals before falling 2-1 to eventual state runner-up Langley High to end their memorable season.

The 2001 Lake Braddock girls’ soccer team finished with a #4 ranking in the Post’s area-poll while two Bruins garnered All-Met honors.

A member of the squad during American’s inaugural season of the women’s soccer in 1990, Pike set a high standard for those who pass through the program after her. She still holds 10 school records for her stellar play from 1990-93, including season and career marks in goals (21 in 1990; 66 total) and points (49 in 1990; 149 total).

Pike started off her career as an Eagle in convincing fashion, registering 21 goals and 49 points as a freshman, both of which remain season records at AU today. She also led AU in scoring each of her four seasons on the squad.

American University, founded in 1893, fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics program, featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men. American will become a full member of the Patriot League with the start of the coming 2001-02 academic calendar.
