WASHINGTON
- Senior Katarina Kollarova
(Vinicne, Slovakia/Valparaiso) has been named Patriot League Women’s
Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second time in two years, the
league’s sports information directors announced, Monday. Kollarova
is joined by nine of her teammates of the Patriot League Academic Honor
Roll.
Kollarova, the Patriot League Tournament Co-Most Valuable Player, earned
a 3.94 grade-point average in business administration and helped lead
the Eagles to the program's second NCAA tournament in three years.
Joining the team as a transfer from Valapariso in 2002, Kollarova garnered
a 33-16 overall record in singles, including a perfect 7-0 Patriot League
record in her final season. In doubles, she played in the No. 1 position,
earning a 33-16 record with partner Kristina
Georgieva (Sofia, Bulgaria/Stefan Karadja) and was honored as a member
of the First Team All-Patriot League for both the 2002-03 and 2003-04
seasons.
Also leading the Eagles academically, freshman Julia Colarusso (Downingtown,
Pa./Downingtown) was the only athlete from the AU tennis program to earn
a 4.00 grade point average for the spring semester. She is joined on the
Patriot League Academic Honor Roll by: Georgieva, Tessa
Hollyn-Taub (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto), Rachael
Honig (Worcester, Mass./Bancroft), Brandi
Kligman (Short Hills, N.J./Milburn), Brynne
Ward (Stone Mountain, Ga./Paideia School), Kristen
Wegel (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan), Ashley
Wroten (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Regan) and Aleksandra
Zerkalova (Moscow, Russia/Moscow).
To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average
in the spring semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the League’s
six winter or nine spring championship sports.
American University, which fields a 19-sport NCAA Division I athletics
program featuring 10 women’s sports and nine for men, completed
its second year of membership in the Patriot League. Since joining the
Patriot League, the University has captured league championships in men’s
cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s
soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis,
field hockey and women’s volleyball and two regular-season titles
in men’s basketball.
