Cross Country Claims Maryland Invitational October 19, 2002 | Results
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - American University's women's cross country team captured the Maryland Invitational this morning, edging the host Terps, 35-39. Samia Akbar led the way for AU, winning her second meet of the season in 17:37. Akbar pulled away from the field the entire race, winning by over 30 seconds. The Eagles took second and third in the race, with freshman Keira Carlstrom placing second in 18:09 and junior Jen Baclawski coming in third in 18:10. Baclawski's time was over 30 seconds faster than her mark last season on the same course. Rounding out the top-five for AU was freshman Zaia Wharton who placed 12th in 19:24 and sophomore Whitney McNees who was 19th in 19:31. Junior Leah Heinecke-Krumhus came in 29th in 20:14 and sophomore Lindsay Gilman placed 49th in 21:42 completed the top-seven for the Eagles. AU's 35 points defeated Maryland who had 39. George Washington was third (73) followed by George Mason (93), Johns Hopkins (122), Morgan State (181) and Coppin State (221). AU's next race is the Patriot League championships held in West Point, N.Y. on November 2nd.
