Gary Abramson Story

Gary Abramson,
SPA/BA ’68

A partner in the Tower Companies, Abramson has been a member of the university’s Board of Trustees since 1986, he was appointed chair of the board in 2005, and made a $1,000,000 pledge to the Dr. Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Arts Center in September 2002. The Abramson Family Recital Hall in the Katzen Arts Center opened in 2005 and has been host to dozens of shows by talented performers.

Through the generosity of donors Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen, American University has a new center for the arts.

A facility that places art at the center of the AU experience, the Katzen Arts Center is an important addition to cultural life in Washington, D.C.

The 130,000-square-foot building on Ward Circle offers generous studio and classroom space for the Department of Art and Department of Performing Arts, plus a 30,000- square-foot gallery to showcase the Katzen and Watkins collections as well as works by students and visiting artists. This state-of-the-art facility also houses a 200-seat recital hall, black box theatre, and dance studio.
