A NATIONWIDE INITIATIVE INTENDED TO:
- Double the number of volunteers in service abroad annually by 2010
- Improve the quality of international volunteer service
- Maximize positive impacts of international service in communities throughout the world
WHO ARE WE?
The Building Bridges Coalition, a project of the Brookings Institution's Initiative on International Volunteering and Service, is a consortium of leading international volunteer organizations, universities & colleges, corporations and government agencies working collaboratively to double the number of international volunteers serving abroad by 2010.
CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT
Colleges and universities are strongly encouraged to join this effort by committing to increase and improve their contributions to international volunteerism: facilitating volunteering by current students and encouraging students to pursue these opportunities after graduation.
Specifically, an international volunteer is one who volunteers outside of his or her current country of residence, someone who crosses borders to perform a direct service for little or no remuneration. Many students choose to serve overseas as a volunteer through structured programs, independently or while on study abroad. Others participate in learning and consciousness-raising experiences which inspire them toward future social change and/or international volunteer activities.
ACTION
We ask that you sign up now to stay informed of our progress and how you can participate. We are building our partner list and our web site and want to stay connected with interested universities and colleges. Our web site will create a network of knowledge and resources in support of this initiative. Accredited higher education institutions are eligible to participate.
