 About Sweden

    Geography

Sweden is situated on the Scandinavian peninsula in Northern Europe and is wedged between Norway, Finland, and the Baltic Sea.  It's land area of 174,000 square miles is about the size of California, although its population of approximately 8.8 million inhabitants (52 inhabitants/square mile) makes it one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe. Government

Extending back over a thousand years, Sweden is one of the oldest continuously existing states. It is also one of the oldest democracies in the world, governed by a popularly elected unicameral parliament. Sweden is well-known for its strict policy of neutrality. In 1995, Sweden became a member of the European Union.

    Economy

During this century Sweden has evolved from being a relatively poor nation with an agrarian-based economy, to its current status as one of the most prosperous and technologically advanced nations in the world.

The Swedish export industry has a strong position in the world market. Volvo and Saab cars, IKEA furniture, Absolut Vodka, Astras Losec, and Ericsson telephones are a few examples of outstanding Swedish design and technology.
