This will be achieved through investments in new industries such as banking, finance and other service based indusrty. This would primarily help Qatar become less dependent on Oil as a main source of revenue but also to strengthen other sectors of the economy which have been lagging behind. The new GIS system that has been introduced is being used extensively in agriculture to increase crop yields and in urban development.
Telecommunications and the Internet are currently regulated by the ministry of transportation and communications and is monopolized by the local PTT, Q-Tel. There are no plans for the privatization of Q-Tel or for opening up the market for others to compete. Q-tel is currently modernizing its equipment in order to offer more services to its customers.
